We've continued to work on fractions this week. The children have been comparing fractions and finding equivalent fractions using fraction strips and number lines. Last week, we read The Blue House Dog by Deborah Blumenthal. We read, discussed, and reread the text. Then, the children worked on writing thorough answers to open-ended reading comprehension questions using specific details from the text to support their answers. This week, we've been working on reading words with the syllable tion. Just today, we started to discuss figurative language. Specifically, we've started talking about similes and metaphors. To encourage the use of more rich, precise vocabulary I created a "fancy words" wall. The kids were SO excited on Monday morning to find a bulletin board trimmed with FEATHERS. Each student has "fancy words" from his or her writing posted on the wall. I'll continue to add words.
