In reading, we've started to learn about theme. We've discussed that the theme is the author's message to us about life. It's the big idea in a story. Theme is what the author wants us to know about people. We've read several stories and compared the story elements, the characters, and the themes of each. We've learned that very different stories can actually have similar themes. The students have finished their turkey stories. Now, we've started our "magic carpet ride" stories. The students will be incorporating all of the narrative techniques we've learned as they write their adventures. Each child chose a setting (or settings) to fly over during his/her carpet ride. Their setting choices were desert, ocean, or forest. The students were given nonfiction articles about each setting and will be including some facts from the articles in their stories. During math, we've started learning about multiplication. The children have learned the basics of multiplication, written Christmas themed story problems, and written letters explaining multiplication concepts to an "elf". We'll be continuing to work on multiplication throughout December. Your child can practice math facts and have fun doing it by visiting abcya.com. It's my favorite educational website, and it's free if your child uses it on a laptop or desktop computer. There are several games and activities. This screenshot shows Holiday Lights Math, which is in the seasonal section of the site.
