During reading, we've spent a lot of time working on reading comprehension strategies such as determining importance, visualizing, predicting, and making inferences. We're practicing those strategies as we read mysteries in small groups. First, the children thoughtfully read Turkey Trouble and took notes about suspects. After that, we began mystery book clubs. Students each received a case file envelope with a mystery book, a new pencil, and a case file notebook. The children have been busy reading, rereading, and jotting their thinking on sticky notes. The other day, one of the children exclaimed, "I feel like a REAL detective!" During math, we've been applying place value knowledge in order to round numbers to the nearest ten and the nearest hundred. We'll also be using rounding to estimate answers to story problems. We'll spend a lot of time discussing the difference between an exact answer and an estimate. I start my rounding unit by having the children skip count with me by tens and by hundreds. We create charts. Sometimes, it is difficult for students to understand that the nearest ten to a number could actually be a 3-digit or even a 4-digit number. For example, the nearest ten to 276 is 280. I've created the following image to explain in more detail how I teach rounding. A game that I discovered can be found at abcya.com. It's called ROUNDING, and you get to it by clicking on the third grade tab. To play on a laptop or desktop computer is free. I'm not sure how much the app costs, but I know that there is one! I'm sorry to say that when I tried the game I did fine with rounding but only made one soccer goal. It wasn't my finest hour! I would suggest having your child try Level One. Level Two might be a good challenge if you think your child is ready. Here are a couple of screenshots to give you an idea of what the game is like. We'll be learning about Connecticut throughout the year. This month, we'll be focusing on Native Americans of Connecticut.
