We'll be keeping busy right up to the end! Thanks for stopping by.
Our field trip to Old Sturbridge Village was a huge success. All of the children had the opportunity to explore the village and to participate in a small group educational activity. The children represented our school well with excellent behavior and attentive manners. The only drawback was that there wasn't enough time to see everything! The children enjoyed Colonial Day. Throughout the day, the children were engaged in a variety of activities. They made butter while singing a working song, wrote with quill pens, stenciled, made sachets and a paper quilt square, played Nine Man Morris, and went outside to learn a variety of colonial games. It was nice to see so many of you for VIP Day. Thanks for joining us and for making the day so special. We've continued to work hard. During reading, the children read about the water cycle and took notes. They also did some reading about the Dust Bowl to build background for the story Leah's Pony. The children worked hard on their end-of-the-year opinion writing prompts. We've started to review expository writing. This week, we'll be working on a piece about severe weather.

In math, we've been continuing to work on measurement, perimeter, and area. The children created shapes that had areas of 20 square centimeters and 20 square inches then compared their sizes. After that, we took advantage of the gorgeous weather. We headed outside with chalk, meter sticks, and yard sticks. In small groups, the children measured and marked off one square yard and one square meter. Remembering the different measurements can be tricky. My hope is that these hands on experiences will make the measurements stick! Next up, we'll be working on graphing, telling time to the nearest minute, and elapsed time. If you'd like to start a little time-telling practice at home, it would be very helpful! During our reading block, we've been focusing on nonfiction text features and reading books about weather. Next week, we'll be reading about the water cycle. The children finished up their cereal boxes and scripts and presented their commercials. We are currently working on a persuasive writing prompt that will assess how well the children understand the persuasive
genre of writing. Next, we'll work more on expository pieces with main ideas and details. Next week is going to be BUSY. On Wednesday, we'll visit the high school for Mayfest. We'll have the opportunity to see artwork created by the high school students. On Thursday, the children will perform for the entire school. In the evening, they'll be back to perform for all of you! I'll see you there! On Friday, we have our field trip to Old Sturbridge Village. Remember that you'll need to arrange for your child to be picked up at 4 p.m. outside the school. |
