Our turtle research projects have been completed. The children were extremely interested in the research process. They read books, articles, and online articles and took thorough notes. In their research groups, the students figured out how to divide the work to complete their projects. They had to discuss what their final project would look like. Each group presented their final product to the class. We've started a new dog-themed unit in reading. We've already read a nonfiction booklet about dog jobs and an informational narrative story called Rosie: A Visiting Dog's Story by Stephanie Calmenson. We've even enjoyed and discussed some dog poetry with a focus on reading fluency and point of view. It took awhile with all of the recent snow days and vacation days, but the children have finally finished their snow monster stories. We created this quick craft to wrap things up. We're finishing up another narrative story this coming week. Then, we'll be reviewing techniques for adding elaborative detail. The children will be describing their "dream rooms". We finished up our division unit and have moved on to fractions. So far, we've covered fractions of a region, fractions of a whole, and fractions of a set. I've also introduced mixed numbers (at a very basic level) and fractions on a number line. Next, we'll work on finding equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and ordering fractions. Fractions strips are the BEST tool for this activity. We use plastic fraction bars at school, but you can also use printable versions. To get a printable set of fraction bars, click here. You can print out the color version, but there is also a black and white version. I recommend that you have your child color the strips. I also recommend getting rid of the percentages at the bottom. We will not be learning about percentages in grade 3.
