Yes, that's a real bear skin. We've been learning about the Pequot tribe and other Native American groups during our social studies time. Someone was generous enough to bring in a bear skin to share with the children. We had a great discussion about the way Native Americans used their natural resources wisely. During writing, each child has been working on a story told from a turkey's point of view. We've been practicing techniques for writing entertaining beginnings, describing with specific details, writing suspense, and elaborating to write a well-developed main event. The suspense excerpt above was something we drafted as a whole group. The children turned and talked with classmates about possible clues and hints. Then, we shared ideas and blended them to create this example. Point of view has been our focus during reading. We began by reading different versions of fairy tales. As you can imagine, Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf had very different ways of looking at things. The three little pigs and the big bad wolf told very different tales, as well. Next, we began to read about more serious topics. The students read and listened to books about Christopher Columbus. We used biographies, an online book found on Raz-Kids, and excerpts from Christopher Columbus's journal. The students read and reread closely and took notes about Columbus's character traits (both the positive and the negative ones). Soon we'll be reading the book Encounter by Jane Yolen, which is a narrative about Columbus's exploration told from a Taino child's point of view. During math, we finished up our unit on rounding and estimating. We'll continue to practice, because those are always skills that students need to revisit. We've been working on adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers with and without regrouping. The children are also applying those skills when solving word problems.
