We also finished a unit on area, which gave us an opportunity to apply computation skills to a new concept. We'll continue to review area concepts throughout the year, since they can be awfully tricky.
Next on our agenda: rounding, addition and subtraction with regrouping, and estimating sums and differences.
s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out action, descriptive details, characters' thoughts and feelings, interesting dialogue, sound effects, and a variety of other techniques. Writers also spent time editing and revising their own work. You can expect to see your child's narrative writing work come home next week.
Currently, students are conducting research to write their own nonfiction Question and Answer books. First, the children examined published examples of Q&A books. After that they chose topics, started reading to research, and brainstormed questions about their topics. They've just started using sources to take notes. Next steps will include drafting their books in Google Slides, adding nonfiction text features and photographs, editing, and revising. Students will present their finished books to their classmates using the Smartboard!
After learning about wigwams, which were traditional Native American dwellings in the Northeastern Woodlands, groups of students planned and constructed their own wigwams cooperatively. We'll be spending about one more week learning about Native American tribes of Connecticut. After that, we'll be starting a science unit on Animals Through Time.
We took a brief break from our wigwam-building to learn about Lebanon. Another 3rd grade class wrote to us sharing information about their town and their school. They asked us to respond with information about our town and school, so we did! I created a slideshow with basic information to use as a tool. As a class, we spent some time reading and learning then filled out a questionnaire to send back.
Thanks for visiting!
